7. Community Service Programmes

Youth are encouraged to serve people in the surrounding impoverished communities.

  • “Proudly PMB” is a project endorsed by the city mayor and three of the largest industrial companies in the city.  Youth are sponsored and equipped to start their own cleaning businesses and employ others to help keep the city clean.
  • Youth groups are also trained to promote the city at any major events like the FIFA world cup soccer and Comrades Marathon. They work closely with the Publicity Association on these occasions.
  • Youth groups are encouraged to volunteer their services where needed by linking with other community based projects i.e. feeding schemes, crèches/ day care centres, homework supervision, orphanages, food and clothing distribution centres and  fresh produce gardening.
  • Turning Hovels into Homes; SLOT uses contacts in the building and development sector to volunteer their expertise to help youngsters upgrade their homes by putting in basics like flooring, leak-proof roofing, doors, windows etc. The success of this project is dependent on the availability of funds for building materials.
